Executive Director

Welcome again to the Bay Area Rehabilitation Center.  As we move through the summer of 2008 and prepare for the fall - returning to school, football, and somewhere down the calendar cooler weather, Bay Area is undergoing changes of its own.  Through the generous funding of the Houston Endowment, we have been able to make improvements to our parking area and we will be making additional improvements to the overall facility.  Also coming in the next few months is the annual United Way Day of Caring.  This program brings a massive amount of support from local businesses that helps United Way agencies improve upon the resources they already have.  At Bay Area, we will continue to build upon the outside improvements we have made over the past few years, making the park and nature trail even more inviting and revitalizing the exterior of the Opportunity Center.

Most exciting of this summer has been the success of our new Pediatric Screening program.  We began this program of free screenings for children who might be questionable for therapy services.  Our hope is that we can help families determine whether or not therapy will benefit their child, but without the worry about cost.  On one Thursday morning in July we saw 5 children, 4 of whom were referred for additional services.  In today's healthcare environment, many families do not want to, or may not have the funds available to, spend money on potentially un-needed services.  By providing this free screening service, we can help eliminate that risk.  Based on the initial success, we will continue this program for the foreseeable future.

We continue to move forward with our integration of the Opportunity Center into Bay Area.  The program is stable and providing the same, if not better, level of service that was provided at the time of the merger.  We are in discussions with a number of outside agencies to develop new programs and expansion of existing programs, and those discussions are moving forward in a positive manner.  As we get those new agreements ironed out, I will update you on the status.  Our goal with the Opportunity Center is to bring back what people remember about the programs -  the greenhouse, integrated community services, and an expanded presence throughout the area while ensuring the program will maintain financial stability and security for the future.

Have fun with the rest of your summer and keep your eyes open for more updates on the Bay Area Rehabilitation Center.
