Early Childhood Intervention

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) supports infants and toddlers (birth to age 3) who have developmental delays or disabilities. Services are designed to help children participate in everyday activities while supporting families along the way.
ECI providers work with children and families in the places they live, learn, and play — including the home and community settings.

ECI Services

 Services in Natural Environment's
ECI services are provided in a child’s natural environment, which may include:
  • The home
  • Childcare or daycare settings
  • Community locations such as parks, grocery stores, or restaurants
Providing services in familiar settings helps children develop skills they can use during daily routines and activities they already enjoy.
If services cannot be effectively provided in the natural environment, other locations may be considered by the ECI team.

A Team Approach to Care
ECI works in partnership with families and a child’s primary physician to support overall development and health. With parent permission, ECI providers may communicate with medical providers to ensure coordinated care and the best possible outcomes.
Support may include:
  • Therapy services
  • Family education and guidance
  • Access to medical, educational, and community resources
For more information about ECI services statewide, families may visit the Texas Health and Human Services website.

How ECI Services Are Assigned
There are multiple ECI programs across the state of Texas.
The program that provides services is determined by the zip code where your family lives.
Families can learn which ECI program serves their area by contacting Texas Health and Human Services or using their online program locator.

Other Therapy Options
If your child has recently transitioned out of ECI, or if you believe your child may benefit from continued services, families have several options:

School-Based Services
Your child may qualify for therapy services through the local school district. The Texas Education Agency provides information about special education services and eligibility.

 Home Health Therapy
Home health programs offer therapy services in the home. While these can be helpful, available equipment and therapy resources may be limited as a child grows and their needs change.

Bay Area Rehabilitation Center provides comprehensive pediatric outpatient therapy for children transitioning out of ECI.

Our medically-based Pediatric Outpatient Program offers:
